Please turn in your Bibles to Acts 2. Today we cover verses 14-36.
From Acts 1:1 to Acts 2:13… a foundation is laid for the rest of The Acts of the Apostles… … of greatest significance is Jesus’ ascension… the descent of the Holy Spirit… and the Baptism with the Holy Spirit.
The Book of Acts and The Church are both built upon a strong foundation… a firm foundation…
Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.
When Jesus ascended…
The Holy Spirit descended… filling and empowering the disciples who would be used to build the church… but only possible by the Holy Spirit inside of them…
The Acts of the Holy Spirit in the Lives of the Apostles… thematic to this book.
Last week we observed a significant event… Pentecost… now fully come… as the Holy Spirit descended this Jewish feast was in total fulfillment.
120 disciples were in Jerusalem waiting for the Promise of the Father… the Baptism with the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:5, 8)…
And, suddenly He descended with miraculous signs… the same signs that accompanied God’s appearances in the OT… wind… fire… and a divine language gift.
As these signs were happening, crowds of religiously devout Jews start to gather…
Millions of devout… religious, but not saved… Jews were present in Jerusalem for Pentecost… one of three mandatory feasts.
Feasts that were now being fulfilled in the life, death and resurrection of Christ… feast that had been practiced for 1500 years… now fully come… complete prophetic fulfillment.
The city… Jerusalem… now swollen with devout Jews… travelling from at least 15 various countries and regions for Pentecost…
And now in this momentthis precise time… this was when God chose to send His Holy Spirit… and birth His church.
Whether the disciples were in a large upper room in a house… or in the house of the Lord… in the Temple District… a Jewish Crowd gathers.
And, they were confused how a group of uneducated Galileans could speak fluently in the dialects of their 15 various home countries abroad…
All of these devout Jews were confused… amazed… and marveled… Acts 2:6-7… as they all heard the disciples speaking fluently “the wonderful works of God…”
They were praising God… celebrating His faithfulness… His goodness… His fulfilment of His promises…
Confused… amazed and marveled… normal human responses to supernatural phenomenon…
And then… another normal human response occured… the crowd divided…
Some of these devout Jews were open minded… amazed and perplexed… but they pressed in to inquire, “Whatever could this mean?”
Another group mocked… rejecting the supernatural phenomenon as originating from God… instead dismissing the event… stating the disciples were “full of new wine.”
Insinuating they were intoxicated.
This whole scene sets the stage for God to move.
Something amazing… heavenly just happened and the people had questions.
And, now Peter… Baptized with the Holy Spirit will stand and raise his voice to this crowd…
Rabbis were known to stand when they preached… by def. “to proclaim.”
Full of the Holy Spirit… Peter speaks truth in love to this group… as he delivers his first sermon…
… as the Holy Spirit powerfully moves through Peter… to be a witness to Jesus in Jerusalem… already a partial fulfillment of Acts 1:8
The Title of Today’s message is “The Pentecost Proclamation.”
Let’s Pray!
Acts 2:14 “But Peter, standing up with the eleven [12 disciples… good proof text for Matthias… Peter standing to preach…], raised his voice and said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words. [I love it… BOLD…All you people… listen up… pay close attention to what I am about to say.] 15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day.
In response to the crowds question and accusation, Peter responds…
Peter first gives a brief defense to the ridiculous accusation that the disciples are drunk…
Then the body of the sermon is an explanation to the question in V12 “Whatever could this mean?”
Later in V37, the Jews ask a second question, “What shall we do?”
These Jews have a positive response to Peter’s sermon and ask for an application…
And, next week we will look at their response, Peter’s guidance, and the wonderful result…
It’s going to be an amazing sermon… much better than today… so be sure to join us again next week.
But today, in V15, Peter wants to put to rest this silly accusation that the disciples are drunk at the third hour of the day… which was 9am.
A Jewish day was sunrise to sunset. 6am… sunrise… three hours later… third hour of the day… 9am.
Not that being drunk at 9am is impossible because we know people who start their day in an intoxicated state…
I used to be that guy, and praise God that man is dead… a new man born of the Spirit… delivered from that bondage… stands before you today.
But, for a Jew present during Feast days… drunk at 9am would have been especially scandalous because devout Jews fasted from eating and drinking until 10am… even until 12pm during feast days.
So, they would understand what Peter meant when he referenced 9am.
And, that’s all that Peter had to say for his defense.
I do find this accusation of intoxication a bit perplexing considering what alcohol does to language…
Intoxication causes the slurring of words… alcohol does NOT bolster the ability to speak lucidly in unknown dialects.
If alcohol did… imagine field sobriety tests today.
The officer would pull over the suspect of drinking and driving… have them exit their car… instruct… “touch your finger to your nose… now walk this line… stand on one foot arms out… NOW SPEAK…”
And, they would listen to see if the suspect spoke in different languages… “oh, you’re speaking clearly in German and French… I’m placing you under arrest.”
That’s ridiculous… and yet a parallel accusation is placed upon the disciples.
They are accused of breaking fast during the feast by being intoxicated because they are clearly speaking in many languages.
So, Peter gives a simple defense and puts that accusation to bed.
Then continuing… Peter enters the body of his sermon to answer the question, “Whatever could this mean?”
And, Peter takes them where we should all take people who are honestly inquiring -OR- even those mocking…
Take them to Scripture…just as Peter does…
Acts 2:16-21 “But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. 18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy. 19 I will show wonders in heaven above And signs in the earth beneath: Blood and fire and vapor of smoke. 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD. 21 And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the LORD Shall be saved.’ ”
Peter tells this crowd of devout Jews, that everything they had seen and heard… all the supernatural phenomenon at Pentecost…
The sound of wind… the sight of fire… the hearing and speaking of languages… all these miraculous signs that symbolized God and stimulated their senses… all of this was in fulfillment of Scripture.
Peter takes them to Joel 2:28-32.
I don’t think Peter pulled out a scroll of Joel to read from…
I think Peter had been reading in the word of God, and we are witnessing the first fulfillment of Jesus’ words in…
John 14:26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”
You may remember a moment in your life where you entered into a spiritual discussion… and the most profound insights sailed off your lipsand verses came to you that were so relevant… so pointed.
And, afterwards you paused and reflected upon what just happened and thought, “WOW… I’m good!”
Hopefully that’s NOT what you thought, but instead recognized what actually happened... the HOLY SPIRIT worked through you to be a powerful witness to Jesus.
Jn 14:26 and Acts 1:8 fulfilled in YOUR LIFE!
Just be sure to spend time with Jesus and His word… just as Peter did… and the Holy Spirit will draw verses to your remembrance.
Peter quotes Joel 2 which states “… in the last days… I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh”…
We are living in the last days… the church age we live in now… from Pentecost to Rapture… these are the last days.
The NT writers seemed to think they were in the last days, and they were… just the beginning of the last days.
Today, it seems we are close to end of the last days. Close to Jesus’ return… because historical events prove we are closer… of most significance is Israel becoming a nation again in 1948…
Israel lost their country in 70 A.D. … and became a nation again in 1948… that doesn’t happen.
What’s also miraculous is nationally they never assimilated into the cultures where they were scattered.
Four… maybe five generations ago my family came from Italy, Germany, and Poland.
I have idea what it means truly to live as an Italian or German… some of you are thinking, “yeah, but we suspected you were a Polack.”
I read… that even that slur… “Polack” is now obsolete… it’s no longer derogatory…
We’ve lost our cultural identities so much that were not even insulted by terms like “dago” or “wop.”
It means nothing to us.
But, Jews have maintained their cultural identity. They are a special group of people.
Peter continues in V17 sharing that in these last days there will be prophetic signs…
Notice Peter didn’t say theses dreams and visions would cease when we had the whole cannon of scripture… the New Testament writers didn’t know of any such cannon.
Nor did Paul when he penned 1 Cor 13:10.
In these last days…
“Your sons and daughters shall prophesy...”
God will pour out His Spirit on men and women alike and use us all as His witnesses.
And, this has heightened meaning for Tribulation time Jews.
And, then the terrible words…
“Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams.”
I used to like that verse…
Then, I looked up the definition of “young men” in Gk. which according to Strong’s means “a youth (under forty).”
Mounce adds, “… one in the prime of life.”
I’ll be 45 next month, so I resent that “under forty” definition.
So, I went back to Joel and checked out the Hebrew… it wasn’t any better. “youth, young man, able (fighting) man…”
James Strong and Bill Mounce are brilliant linguists, but I think they forgot about Caleb in the book of Joshua.
Joshua 14:10-12 Caleb says to Joshua, “… here I am this day, eighty-five years old. 11 As yet I am as strong this day as on the day that Moses sent me; just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war, both for going out and for coming in. 12 Now therefore, give me this mountain of which the LORD spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakim [giants] were there, and that the cities were great and fortified. It may be that the LORD will be with me, and I shall be able to drive them out as the LORD said.”
And in Joshua 15, Caleb indeed drove the Anakim out of Hebron.
So, take that Bill Mounce and James Strong.
If you are here today, and you’re no longer a young man by definition… that doesn’t mean your work for the Lord is done.
I saw Pastor Chuck Smith preach two times before he went home to be with the Lord… and he was on oxygen.
He was a Caleb… killing Anakim in his own way.
So “… young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams.”
It’s interesting… Jesus and His disciples… they were a movement of young men.
We know Jesus was around the age of 30.
John was thought to be somewhere around the age 16… and the rest of the disciples somewhere in between.
But, if you Google “12 Apostles”… you’ll see picture after picture of old men.
Gray hair… gray beards… receding hair lines. That’s the wrong picture of these guys.
“I’m following you Jesus… slowly, but I’ll get there…”
Many of the disciples were martyred before they were old… John lived long…
According to Peter’s vision in Acts 10… he was a young man… “Young men shall see visions…”
I’m really ok with all this… you young men go have your visions… I’ll stay home and dream my dreams.
No… Lord willing, I’m going to be like Pastor Chuck and Caleb… fighting those Anakim at age 85.
How about you?
In V18, again Joel reiterates the Spirit and spiritual gifts will be poured out on both “menservants and maidservants.”
The Spirit shows not partiality to gender or social class… the servants by def. “slaves” also receive the Spirit.
Male, female, young, old, slave or free… God pours out His Spirit and giving spiritual gifts to all people.
Just as He avails salvation to all.
For God so loved world… all people… all classes… all genders… all races…
In VSS 19-21… the Law of Double Reference… the prophetic near and far is in picture.
What happened at Pentecost was a near or partial fulfillment of what will be completely fulfilled at the far… the day of the LORD… towards the end of the Tribulation period.
Reflected by the celestial signs in the heavens in VSS 19-21… “Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD.”
Jesus’ 2nd Coming.
And, while this is a very Jewish time on earth… the time of Jacob’s Trouble.. the open invite extends to every generation… V21 “… whoever calls on the name of the LORD Shall be saved.”
An invitation for all ages.
Then Peter continues… speaking truth in love…
Acts 2:22-24 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know—23 Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; 24 whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it.”
Wow! Just 7 weeks earlier… this same Peter used his sword and hacked off Malchus’ ear.
Now again… he uses a sword… quoting Joel… then David… using a righteous sword… the word of God.
This was not a seeker sensitive message… Peter first mentions Jesus was from Nazareth… an area looked down upon by devout… especially scholarly Jews.
But an area of prophetic significance. Matt 2:23 reads, “And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, “He shall be called a Nazarene.” possibly fulfilling Isa 11:1.
So, this Nazarene Jesus… Peter declares God proved Him “… by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him…” in their presence.
Many of these devout Jews witnessed Jesus’ ministry…
I wonder if any of them were touched… healed by Jesus?
“Signs and wonders” a phrase that appears 75x in scripture… demonstrated the reality and power of God… sometimes to the most hard of hearts…
In Exodus 7:3, God demonstrated signs and wonders over the land of Egypt… to many hard hearted people… “And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and multiply My signs and My wonders in the land of Egypt.”
In John 4:48, Jesus spoke to His own hard hearted people… “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe.”
The Holy Spirit descends at Pentecost and gives a sign of the gift of tongues, which Paul said, in 1 Cor 14:22 “Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers…”
Since the beginning of time, God has been proving Himself in many and diverse ways… nature… a still small voice… wind… fire… many signs and wonders…
And, mankind has been hard hearted… unbelieving… despite God’s very real presence.
Peter reminds these devout Jews… he takes them back to the ministry of Jesus done in their midst… “as you yourselves also know...”
What a sad statement… they knew the truth… and had denied Jesus.
And, in V23, Peter really presses in… a fascinating verse that marries the Sovereignty of God with the Responsibility of Man.
And, here at Calvary Chapel, we are neither Calvinists, nor Arminians… we’re in the middle.
There’s a saying… “the truth is in the tension.”
V23 reads, “Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death...”
Expositors states, “The death of Jesus is presented as resulting from the interplay of divine necessity and human freedom. Nowhere in the NT is the paradox of a Christian understanding of history put more sharply than in this earliest proclamation of the death of Jesus the Messiah: God’s purpose and foreknowledge stand as the necessary factors behind whatever happens; yet whatever happens occurs through the instrumentality of wicked people expressing their own human freedom. It is a paradox without ready solution. To deny it, however, is to go counter to the plain teaching of Scripture in both the OT and NT and to ignore the testimony of personal experience.”
The paradox’s in the Bible attest to it’s truth. If man simply wrote the Bible… without inspiration of the Holy Spirit… the difficulties would have been removed… yet they remain.
For these, devout Jews… I imagine they feel convicted as Peter says this words in V23… “you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death...”
I heard a Pastor tell a story of a debate in Israel many years ago about who killed Jesus… and many religious people were there and Chuck Smith was there.
Various religious groups blamed one another… Jews… orthodox Christians… and so forth…
And, Chuck stood up, and said something to the effect of, “I know who killed Jesus… I did… it was my sin.”
It was all the sins of mankind… past, present, and future… that put Jesus on the cross.
It was my lawless hands… your lawless hands… but, He willing went to the cross to take our place… to pay the price for our crime…
And, as we look to Him in faith, God no longer sees lawless hands… we are cleansed… our hands are transformed… now righteous because of Jesus.
And, to prove God accepted Jesus’ sacrifice… V24… “whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it.”
God did not reject Jesus’ sacrifice… He accepted it and resurrected Jesus from the dead.
And, who raised Jesus from the grave?
In this verse we read “… whom God raised up...”
In Gal 1:1 we read, “Paul, an apostle (not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised Him from the dead...”
So, the Father raised Jesus.
Well, Rom 8:11 states, “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”
So, the Holy Spirit raised Jesus.
See also 1 Pet 3:18 and Rom 1:4 for verses on the Spirit raising Jesus.
But, Jesus Himself also stated…
Jn 2:19 “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
Likewise, Jesus stated in Jn 10:18 “No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.”
So, clearly Jesus raised Himself from the dead.
So, which is it?… They’re all true!! This is a picture of the trinity… the Godhead resurrected Jesus Christ…
Again, V24 states “whom God raised up...”
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit- All God… All raised up Jesus.
And there are verses that also speak about all three involved in both creation and salvation as well.
For creation: 1 Cor 8:6 and Genesis 1:1–2.
For salvation: John 3:6, 16.
And, Peter explains God “loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it.”
The NASB states, “putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.”
“The pains of death” … “the agony of death” … the word pain by def. speaks of “birth pangs.”
And, it’s an interesting picture because death is pictured as giving birth… death birthed life as Jesus was resurrected.
And, as agonizing as it is for a mom to deliver a baby.
So, true was it for the darkness of death to give birth to the light.... Jesus again alive… defeating death and the grave. Victory.
And, we… and all who call on the name of Jesus are saved… we have victory over the grave… death is not our end.
And, to back that up, Peter again takes these devout Jews to scripture, now quoting David and Psalm 16:8-11.
Acts 2:25-28 “For David says concerning Him: ‘I foresaw the LORD always before my face, For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken. 26 Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad; Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope. 27 For You will not leave my soul in Hades, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. 28 You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of joy in Your presence.’ ”
Peter quotes David because David wrote of Messiah… specifically in Ps 16 about how Jesus’ body would not be corrupted or decay in the grave… Jesus soul would not remain in Sheol… in the state of the dead… because of what Peter said in V24… “whom God raised up.”
David wasn’t writing of himself… David was not dead and rose again… David wrote of Messiah.
So, VSS 25-28 are scriptural evidence to support Peter’s statement pertaining to the resurrection.
And this was an important point, because there was a rumor going around Jerusalem that the disciples stole the body… while the Roman guards slept.
Matt 28:15 states, “...this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.”
So, it’s good that Peter addresses the resurrection…
And, then Peter continues discussing David…
Acts 2:29 “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.”
Even today in Jerusalem… in the Old City… stands a site called, “David’s Tomb” which is thought to be the burial place of king David.
And, Peter establishes… David is dead… we know where his grave is…
And, Peter is going somewhere with this…
V30 “Therefore, being a prophet [David was a king, a prophet, and the sweet Psalmist of Israel], and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne,”
Peter is speaking about the Davidic Covenant in 2 Sam 7, whereby God promised David that his seed after him would have his kingdom and throne established forever.
Peter says the fruit of David’s body… his seed… his ancestor was the Christ… the Messiah… Jesus.
And, in Jesus’ blood line through Mary (Luke 3)… Jesus is an ancestor of king David
And through Jesus legal lineage via Joseph (Matt 1)… Jesus is a descendant of David.
Jesus was of the seed of David… and in Jesus’ 2nd return… during His millennial reign… His throne will be established forever.
V31 he [David], foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption.
Again, Peter is establishing Ps 16 as a proof text of Jesus’ resurrection to these devout Jews.
This was significant… Peter is using scripture to chip away at the spiritual scales on their eyes…
And, the Holy Spirit is simultaneously working on their hearts and minds… impressing upon them the truth of Peter’s words.
It’s the same today… as you are witnessing through the word… your testimony… praying with people… even the testimony of how you deal with life and trials…
Through all these things… People are watching and the Holy Spirit is working with you… we work in tandem with Him.
Acts 1:8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me…”
That’s still happening today through you.
V32 “This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. 33 Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.”
This is it. This is the answer to the question these devout Jews asked back in V12, “Whatever could this mean?”
Jesus rose again, ascended to heaven, and the Holy Spirit descended Baptizing us with the Holy Spirit… all prophesied by Joel the Prophet.
Jesus’ works testified that He is Messiah.
Jesus’ resurrection testified that He is Messiah.
And, the word of God through David… testified that He is Messiah.
And, what you see and hear… wind, fire, and tongues…
It’s all God. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit working together… we witnessed these things, just as you are witnessing.
And to further to point and bring it home, Peter now quotes Ps 110:1
V34 “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself: ‘The LORD said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, 35 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’
Peter quotes Ps 110 as another proof text that David was not speaking of himself… David did not ascend to heaven.
David spoke of Messiah.
The LORD (Yahweh God- the Father)… said to David’s Lord (Jesus the Christ… the Messiah), “Sit at My right hand, 35 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’
Jesus ascended and is seated at the right hand of the Father… until He returns and all the enemies of God will be put under Jesus feet as He ushers in His kingdom.
Heb 8:1 attests that Jesus is indeed in heaven today, “We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens…”
And, Jesus is not just sitting around… He’s at work…
Luke testified of this in his opening verse in Acts. Acts 1:1 “The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach…
The Gospel of Luke was just the beginning of all that Jesus was doing and teaching… Acts is a continuation of Jesus’ doing and teaching.
Heb 7:25 also tells us… “Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.”
Jesus is presently saving anyone who comes to Him… and Jesus is praying for you and I constantly… truly praying without ceasing… He lives to make intercession for you.
And, I’ll share one more thing Jesus is doing… He is defending you…
Rev 12:10 speaks of the accuser. Accuser is the Hebrew word “Satan”…
Very interesting. Being an accuser is Satan’s name, nature, and mission.
Rev 12:10 states “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.”
In the heavenly court room, Satan is casting accusations against all of us… day and night…
And, Jesus defends by His blood… as our sins are covered by His blood…
The testimony of our lives is we believe in Jesus…
And our testimony is we put to death the life of flesh to be faithful to Jesus.
And, that’s how we defeat Satan… according to Rev 12:11 “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.”
I love that verse. That’s how you overcome Satan folks.
That verse is as true for us today as it will be for persecuted Jewish believers in the tribulation time.
Peter concludes his sermon with these words in…
V36 “Therefore [big word… because of all that I have said… here’s the application…] let all the house of Israel know assuredly [with no doubt] that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”
Now that you know… and the words “let” and “know” are the Gk. word ginōskō which speak of an intimate knowledge.
Now that you know… go tell everybody… go tell all the devout Jews that Jesus is alive.
Jesus is Lord by def. “Master.”
And, Christ by def. “the Anointed One, Messiah.”
And, you go do the same.
Go tell the world about Jesus this week…
Let’s Pray!
Read ahead… next week we pick up in V37 and will finish Chapter 2 of Acts… looking at the response of these devout Jews, the application… the result…and the birth and focus of the early church…
Beautiful verses ahead…
If you need prayer for anything come forward…
Especially if you want to give your life to Jesus… the Lord and Christ.
